Easter Island (Isla de Pascua or Rapa Nui) is a speck in the middle of nowhere with Chile is 3700 kilometres to the East and Pitcairn Island 2000 kilometres to the West. The history of Easter Island is fascinating and tragic and serves as a valuable lesson for civilisation.
I had a real sense of excitement when the aircrew announced "Ladies and gentleman we are about to commence our descent to Easter Island" and then to see the cliffs rise up out of the ocean. Hanga Roa is a small town where horses and dogs roam. Rano Raraku, the extinct volcano site of the quarry of the Moai, the giant stone statues, is impressive and the restored Tongariki, magnificent.
