Uruguay is not often on the list of destinations for many travelers. I wanted to visit after reading a book long ago entitled South America overland that described Uruguay as a step back in time. I found it to be a mixture of modern and old - modern buildings, cars and people intermixed with horse drawn carts. In Montevideo for New Years Eve all seemed quiet until midnight when the sky lit up with fireworks.
After Antarctica, Chile and Argentina, Uruguay was too close to miss. Santiago, Buenos Aires and Montevideo are almost on the same lattitude.
